Motivation
The Design Science Journal thematic collection on Design Education aims to report on and stimulate discussion on research and practice in Design Education communities. This collection aims to reflect on the sudden and unforeseen changes in design education practices in recent years, with a view to better understand what educators can learn from high quality scientific contributions to develop pedagogies. Design Education has faced unprecedented times as the global population faces significant challenges such as climate change, over-consumption, and stress on resources, increasing inequality and the Covid-19 pandemic. It is therefore timely to consider the role that design education plays in ensuring competent and skillful designers and engineers of the future. This thematic collection on Design Education aims to report on and stimulate discussion on research and practice in Design Education communities. By sharing design and education teaching and learning experiences we can develop educational concepts and strategies to help students and graduates to address current and future challenges and provide a platform to engage a wide and diverse community to explore the ideas from different perspectives. Design Education has become agile, with the ability to adapt to a changing social and technical landscape. When disruption in technology, industry or behaviour are introduced, educators must consider the educational impacts and post-education impact. Shaping future designers with knowledge of UN Sustainable Development Goals in a rapidly changing world, established, alternative and emerging educational paradigms to equip engineers and designers of the future.
